Inspired by a book called Beauty In Decay, a collection of photographs of derelict places taken by 50 amateur photographers and Gareth McConnell's project Institutions, it suddenly became clear that this could be a huge part of this unit. I had to get into these places to take my own photos and use this unit to overcome my fear of hospitals.
I then started to look up derelict hospitals in the area, find out when they closed, why they closed, and access to them now. A lot of the hospitals I found are protected by security firms with high metal fences around the buildings. This would mean gaining access to them would involve breaking the law. I then found the website; http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/ , a public forum for "Urban Explorers" in the UK. A lot of people had commented on their own photos saying that as the fence around a lot of these places has been broken down, it is not forcing an entry or damaging property to just walk in! I made the choice that I could wait weeks for replies from emails, or hours on the phone to security firms trying to gain access. I then realised my only option to get the photos I needed was to take the risk and walk straight in through a broken fence.
