My ideas developed and changed very rapidly in this unit. It all started on our Canterbury visit when I noticed modern life was completely run by rules and regulations. People cannot make their own choices about danger any more, as everything is decided for us. Signs guide us on our journey, not only showing directions, but giving
us orders; Do Not Enter, Keep Out, No Photography, etc.
After visiting the prison and reading the sign outside the door which clearly states; "No cameras or mobile phones", I started to ask questions; Why can't I take my camera on the grounds of the prison, what harm is it going to do? The answers were not clear, it then lead onto the idea of prisons and hospitals and how it is rare to find photos of people in them, the empty wards themselves, even the store cupboards and offices. After looking into rules on taking photos in these places and asking people who knew the answers, my journey of making connections with people who work at hospitals or have worked at asylums that have now shut began.
